Bit was born on a sheep ranch near Tenmile, Oregon on April 11, 2004. He joined our family on June 29, 2004. He was one of a litter of 6 males, and the smallest and most timid of the lot. We chose Bit for his non-alpha personality, his small size and his classic markings. Growing up, he's shown that he has a true obsession for balls, especially the Greta Scrambler, known here as "The Egg". We use it as a training tool with him, as he loves to "herd" it, making it easy to teach him basic commands such as "down", "that'll do", etc. He is best buds with Puck, Max and Merry, and is kind to every person or dog he's ever met. What a good boy he is!
Besides the oh-so-fascinating Egg, Bit loves tennis balls, soccer balls, basketballs, footballs, and just about any other kind of ball you can imagine. He loves to run fast, play in rivers and the ocean, chase water jetted from a hose, wrestle with any dog who'll play nice, and lay in his mom's lap. He's an all 'round happy, gentle and sweet-natured dog. Recently we took him for his first herding clinic to be instinct tested and to get some "quality time" in a pen with some sheep. He did great! The instructor says Bitsy has what it takes, and so he'll now be attending herding clinics on a regular basis. Bit has also learned to enjoy his obedience classes, where he truly excels. He's now at the off-leash level of training, and as soon as he's over a year old, we'll sign him up for classes so he can get his Canine Good Citizen certification. The trainer and I have every faith in him being able to excel in this area, also.
Being a somewhat timid dog, Bit is afraid of cats, noisy vehicles and new people and situations. Recently he's learned that wheelchairs, ground-level signs, boulders, small children and large malamutes are not to be feared (although it took him a bit longer than usual with the malamute, whom I can only imagine Bit thought was a huge, hairy bear :-). He trusts readily, so helping him to get used to new sights, sounds and situations is a relatively easy task.
Being a beautiful young dog, Bit gets a lot of attention and comments from strangers, who love his classic good looks, his intense ginger eyes, and his alert, upright ears. We encourange kind people to fuss over Bit, as he loves the attention. People who were attracted by his looks quickly fall in love with Bit's sweet personality.
Our hopes for Bit are that he will enjoy hobby Herding, Flyball, and perhaps Agility, and that he will continue to advance in Obedience and earn his CGC award. We hope to start him in Flyball classes soon, as well as to introduce him to Agility classes when he's finished his next level of Obedience. We hope to help him to continue to grow in confidence, and to keep the wonderful personality that everyone who knows him loves so well. No matter what he decides he enjoys doing most, though, he'll always be the perfect border collie in his mom's eyes :-).
